Ivan Rodriguez, Hall of Fame

Ivan Rodriguez made his Major League debut with the Texas Rangers on June 20, 1991 at 19 years of age. He was the youngest player in MLB in 1991 and 1992. Rodriguez went on to win 13 Gold Glove Awards, more than any other catcher in the history of baseball – Johnny Bench won 10 and Yadier Molina has 8. His 7 Silver Slugger Awards ranks him second all time among catchers behind Mike Piazza. Rodriguez appeared in 14 consecutive All Star Games and was the 1999 American League Most Valuable Player. Rodriguez was the MVP of the 2003 National League Championship Series helping the Florida Marlins defeat the Chicago Cubs in 7 games. The Marlins went on to win the 2003 World Series in 6 games over the Yankees. His 2,427 games behind the plate and 14, 864 putouts both rank first all time for catchers.

Rodriguez is listed in 28 of the 43 the Top 10 Texas Ranger Career Batting categories tracked by Baseball Reference including 2nd all time for Hits (1,747), Doubles (352), 4th all time for Home Runs (217), and 5th all time for Triples (28).

Alan Trammell, Baseball Hall of Fame, World Series MVP

Birthdate: February 21

Alan Trammell debuted with the Detroit Tigers in 1977 at 19 years of age; one year younger than his keystone base battery mate Lou Whittaker. In 1978 Whittaker won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in a landslide vote over Paul Molitor, Carney Lansford, Rich Gale, and Trammell. In the summer of 2018 Trammell will join Molitor in the Baseball Hall of Fame after being selected by the Veterans Committee.

Like most HOF inductees selected by the Veterans Committee, Trammell’s record is questioned as being HOF worthy. The only major award of his career was as MVP of the 1984 World Series in which the Tigers defeated the San Diego Padres in 5 games and Trammell went 9 for 20 with 6 RBI and 2 HR. He twice led the American League in Sacrifice Hits, but never in any other offensive or defensive category. To be certain, 6 All Star Game appearances, 4 Gold Gloves, and 3 Silver Slugger awards spread over a 20 year career are nothing to sneeze at. However, Trammell’s fate was to play Major League Baseball at the same time as fellow American League shortstops Cal Ripken and Robin Yount, both of whom were first-ballot HOF inductees with four American League MVP Awards between them and the standard by which all shortstops are measured.
