Ken Caminiti – 1996 National League MVP

Ken Caminiti was a three time Gold Glove Third Baseman with a career fielding percentage of .946 at the hot corner. Ten of his 15 years in major league baseball were played with the Houston Astros where he recorded a 5.3 career Defensive WAR, 6th all time among Astros position players. His 546 RBI’s as an Astro place him 9th all time in team history, his 204 doubles puts him at 10th, and his 659 strikeouts is 8th most in Astro history.

Caminiti’s three consecutive Gold Gloves are tarnished by the use of performance enhancing drugs. Caminiti is ranked among the top 25 steroid users in MLB history. To his credit, he was also the first MLB player to admit to using PEDs in a Sports Illustrated article with Tom Verducci. Sadly, drug and alcohol abuse contributed to a 2004 fatal heart attack at just 41 years of age.
