Batting Title Winners

The mind-game duel between batter and pitcher is my favorite nuance of the sport. Sure, home runs are exciting, but I much prefer watching a batter work a deep count, making the pitcher come to him, taking what is given, and putting the ball into play. Likewise, I enjoy watching a good batter walk away from the plate, shaking his head, after striking out looking on a pitch he was not expecting. A perfectly executed hit and run is the most exciting play in baseball. A seeing eye grounder or dead quail single that breaks up a no-hitter is both heart breaking and satisfying when most batters are successful less than 30% of the time. Seeing a defense play a batter straight away speaks volumes about his batting prowess and lack of predictability. Seeing that same batter caught in a corkscrew whiff on a third-strike breaking pitch is a humble reminder that success in the batters box is the exception rather than the norm. So here’s to the batters who dare to dig in, face the heat, and, hopefully, give us that wonderful crack of the bat that keeps us coming back for more.
